About Us

Rooted in Community,
Driven by Service

The Underwood Rural Fire Protection Association is a volunteer-driven organization serving the hamlet of Underwood, Minnesota, and the surrounding Clearwater County communities. Our members are neighbors — farmers, teachers, tradespeople, and families — who answer the call when emergencies strike.

Rural fire protection presents unique challenges: long response distances, remote properties, and limited water access. That is why we invest continuously in training, equipment, and community partnerships to ensure every call gets a fast, professional response — no matter where you are in our district.

Fire Prevention Tips for Rural Living

Rural properties face distinct fire risks. These practical steps can help protect your home, family, and livelihood.

1

Maintain Defensible Space

Keep at least 30 feet of cleared vegetation around your home. Remove dead branches, dry brush, and leaf piles that can carry fire to your structure.

2

Install & Test Smoke Alarms

Place smoke alarms on every level and inside each bedroom. Test them monthly and replace batteries at least once a year.

3

Know Your Address — Clearly

Ensure your street address is visible from the road with high-contrast, well-lit signage. Emergency responders need it to find you fast.

4

Plan Your Escape Route

Have two exits from every room and a practiced meeting spot outside. Rural homes may be farther from hydrants — every second counts.

Get Involved

A Stronger Community,
Together

We believe that fire safety is a shared responsibility. That is why we invest in programs that bring our community together — from youth fire camp to open-house events at the station.

  • Youth Fire Camp: Free summer program teaching kids fire safety, career exploration, and teamwork through hands-on activities.
  • Station Open Houses: Visit the fire station, meet the crew, and see the equipment up close — families welcome.
  • School Visits: Our firefighters visit local schools to teach children about fire prevention and emergency preparedness.
  • Volunteer Opportunities: Join our team of dedicated volunteers — training provided, no experience required.
